Abbey Road’s illustrious album cover only came about after The Beatles abandoned grandiose plans for a lavish overseas shoot.
In a new documentary about the Abbey Road Studios, If These Walls Could Sing, Ringo revealed that the theme for The Beatles’ final album (based on when it was recorded) only became apparent late on in the process.
“We didn’t think Abbey Road,” he said.
“[We thought] we’ve got to go to Egypt and the pyramids or to some volcano in Hawaii. Then we thought, ‘oh well, sod it, let’s just walk across the road.”
